Checkmate on Hunger

Jurors' Favorite

Our city, represented by a crown jewel, is a nod to Queen Charlotte Sophia. On any given day, you’ll see locals enjoying a competitive game of chess in the heart of our Queen city at Trade and Tryon Streets. Just as in a game of chess, our board is a strong foundation for strategy and the Queen is a powerful piece in our goal to “Checkmate on Hunger” in the Charlotte community.

Jurors' Favorite

Our Canstruction entry celebrates Charlotte’s thriving local brewery scene. With dozens of local beer and cider makers in our city, and a dozen more on the way, it’s hard to imagine that Charlotte didn’t have a single local brewery until as recently as 2009. We’ve since become a major contributor to North Carolina’s status as home to the most craft breweries in the South – and home to national and international award-winning brews. We see the explosive growth of the craft beer scene as testament to our city and the creative culture it fosters. So a toast to the Queen City and our many local innovators. Our mug runneth over…

Breakfast: The Most Important Meal of the Day

Best Use of Labels

People's Choice Award

Many people do not have the luxury of waking up to a wholesome meal to start their morning. Sometimes a hot cup of coffee can be the spark for a productive day. The mug celebrates everyone’s favorite city, and you can almost taste the coffee and cream swirling inside the cup. When you want to treat yourself, a fresh doughnut is the perfect accompaniment to any breakfast.

Queen Charlotte of Meck-CAN-burg

Structural Ingenuity

Our City’s name sake was a beloved figure in 18th century England. She was known for her patronage of music and the arts, but also for her charitable work. She provided funding for hospitals, and founded several orphanages during her life. Her efforts to help those around her were so appreciated that she is still honored today. Let’s do our part to continue that legacy. With your help, ending hunger can be our “crowning” achievement!

Special Thanks to Duncan Parnell for their generous contribution, to Katy Weidner and the ADW team for their help and support, and to Ron Gulledge at Shaw Contract Group for providing our Carpet Tiles.

SOCK IT to Hunger

Best Meal

Our design is based on the retro game Rock’em Sock’em Robots because CANstruction’s goal is to help KNOCK OUT hunger in our community. We selected cans that go along with the nostalgic childhood theme with the “spaghetti o’s” and “beefaroni” style meals in primary colors that mimic the game’s colors – and because we wanted to provide more of an easy ‘full meal’ solution to Second Harvest.

Queen's Feast

Honorable Mention

Just as the queen of any land is tasked with providing for her people, our Queen’s Feast CANstruction exhibit is intended to represent the logo of our Queen City, Charlotte, and ultimately provide food to those in need within our community. By utilizing the types of canned foods selected – beans, tomatoes and tuna – several different recipes can be generated at local food banks, providing a hearty and balanced meal for all to enjoy!

Team Captain: Cory High

The Charlotte StrEAT Car

Honorable Mention

Just as the re-introduction of the street car will breathe new life and opportunity into Charlotte, a giving spirit can breathe that same life and opportunity into the lives of struggling families. The Charlotte street car represents a renewed interest in our City’s identity, pride, and heritage, and symbolizes our forward movement as we evolve from operating as individuals to becoming a more collaborative community. The meal contained in this installation is a crowd favorite of pasta and corn, capable of making a simple, old fashioned goulash.

AutoCAN Charlotte

Honorable Mention

Collaborative efforts among the related fields of architecture and interior design CAN produce a creative and substantive concept. Integrating design technology and Queen City admiration, our team strived to showcase how this unique blend CAN make a difference in the fight against hunger. Our structure consists of a desktop computer that is complete with a CAD-like version of the Charlotte city skyline, colorfully displayed across the monitor. We chose a computer to embody the technology, knowledge, and design skills utilized over the course of completing this project. The Charlotte skyline promotes both community awareness and betterment, while also representing the hungry citizens who will benefit from this great cause.

Charlotte Can Do It

Honorable Mention

Our design is created to not only focus on a known local landmark, but also represent Charlotte as a catalyst for change. Like the Firebird, Charlotte residents have the potential to ignite a solution to end hunger. We all have a responsibility to do what we can to make sure that everyone has basic survival necessities. If we all do a little, we can make a bigger impact. No one should ever be without a meal. Our design incorporates a high protein diet of vegetables and beans.

Charlotte can enlighten, Charlotte can elevate. Charlotte can educate.
