SOA Lecture: Jennifer Newsom, Dream The Combine

When: 1/29/2021 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
Where:
UNC Charlotte School of Architecture

The School of Architecture presents a free public lecture by Jennifer Newsom, followed by a Q&A. Register here to receive the Zoom link.

An architect, artist, educator and founding partner of the firm Dream the Combine, Jennifer Newsom creates site-specific installations exploring metaphor, imaginary environments, perceptual uncertainties, and the boundaries between real and illusory space that cast doubt on our understanding of the world. Using superficial perceptions of race as a provocative impetus for her work, she employs techniques such as doubling (mirrors), juxtaposition (collage), overlay (projection) and mimicry (casting) to convey a multiplicity of viewpoints at the same time. (Read here about Hide & Seek, a 2018 immersive installation at MoMA PS1.)

Before establishing her own practice, she worked in diverse firms, including Adjaye Associates, and was an instructor at Juxtaposition Arts, a youth empowerment and apprenticeship program in North Minneapolis.
