Membership Meeting | Modern Mentorship

This membership meeting will focus on Mentorship within the profession. We are happy to bring in Je'Nen Chastain who is the founder of Apostrophe Consulting, a practice focused on helping architects and next-gen leaders strengthen their teams and businesses. We will start with a presentation by Je'Nen and follow up with a panel discussion including participants at various stages in their career. During the event there will be an opportunity to sign up to participate in the AIA Mentorship Exchange Program for the coming year.
Keynote Speaker:
Je'Nen Chastain, MBA, Assoc. AIA
Je'Nen is the founder of Apostrophe Consulting, a purpose-driven, woman-owned management consulting practice dedicated to helping architects transform their companies. With expertise in talent development, change management, and business strategy, Je'Nen helps her clients navigate growth in a changing world. In addition to consulting with firm leaders on operations challenges, she designs custom, in-house training solutions that support architects with leadership development, mentorship, and communication. Together, she helps her clients win more work, build a culture of leadership and trust, and create a pipeline for emerging leaders to grow.
Je'Nen also co-hosts the podcast Practice Disrupted, a show that explores the evolution of architectural practice through conversations with industry disruptors and thought leaders. Common themes include business strategy, operations, technology, cultural shifts, entrepreneurship, and professional development.
Je'Nen earned both her MBA and BArch, and has trained in architecture. She has received several awards for her leadership in the profession, including the 2017 AIA Associates Award.
Panelists:
John Komisin
John Komisin is an architect, artist, podcaster, and a longtime mentor. He recently retired after a 45-year career, the last 35 years of those with Little. While there, he developed a leadership development program which he led for many years to introduce younger staff members to areas of the profession that would be important to master as they grew their careers. Between sessions at his easel these days, he continues to mentor students and young professionals.
Carol Bacon, AIA
Carol Bacon, AIA is a principal with ADW Architects with 15 years of professional experience. She specializes in educational architecture and serves as the Director of Professional Development for ADW. Carol has a true passion for education and mentorship. She has focused on supporting architectural education through published research with ACSA, working with AIAS, working on accreditation teams with NAAB, being a liaison to the Integrated Path to Licensure (IPAL program), an advisor to the CPCC Arch Tech program, a thesis project advisor, and a regular design review jury critic. Carol is also an adjunct professor at UNC Charlotte's School of Architecture and has taught a variety of studio, seminar, and elective courses since 2014. She has been involved in AIA initiatives and committees at all levels and is currently serving as the AIA Charlotte Secretary as a member of the Board of Directors Executive Committee.
Nicole R. Stanisic
Nicole is a full time faculty member at Central Piedmont Community College where she teaches courses related to Architectural Design and Technology. In addition to her classes, Nicole advises students through their course scheduling and job pursuits, and is a faculty advisor for AIAS. Prior to teaching full time Nicole worked at a variety of firm types and sizes and is currently freelancing as an Architectural Designer and consultant.
Sydney Garceau, AIAS
Sydney Garceau is enrolled in the Integrated Path to Licensure program at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, working as an Architectural Student Intern within Program Delivery at Progressive AE. She is currently a fourth year architecture student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a minor in Urban Studies, is enrolled in the Arts and Architecture Honors Program at UNC Charlotte. She served as the AIAS UNC Charlotte Chapter President from 2021-2022, and now acts as a mentor to the current chapter.
