Charlotte Center City Partners Announces David Furman as 2015 Vision Award Recipient
Monday, April 20, 2015
Charlotte Center City Partners has selected David Furman, Founder of Centro CityWorks, as the recipient of the 2015 Vision Award. The award is intended to recognize and celebrate the contributions of a community leader who has made the Center City more vibrant and extraordinary.
Furman, an architect and Charlotte native, is a housing specialist with over 35 years experience designing and developing thousands of units, in projects of all scales throughout Charlotte and the eastern part of the U.S. His projects have won design awards from national entities including the American Institute of Architects (AIA). In 1994, Furman was elevated to Fellowship in AIA in recognition of his career in housing innovation. In 2005, he was inducted into the inaugural class of Builder Magazine’s Hall of Fame for an outstanding career in housing design.
While founding three different architectural practices, Furman created development company Centro CityWorks to focus on urban, affordable, unique housing projects. Between 2000 and 2008, Centro CityWorks created 20 projects, valued at over $250 million, 15 of which are in Uptown Charlotte including two high-rise towers. Furman helped establish and make First Ward the great Uptown neighborhood it is today, introduced the first high rise living in Uptown with the Courtside project, and is now branching into new office concepts.
“David Furman is a true Center City visionary, an architect, artist and developer. As an architect first and a developer second, he has brought beauty and sophistication to all his projects and across our urban neighborhoods,” said Michael Smith, President and CEO of Charlotte Center City Partners. “David walks the walk of an urban pioneer, and we are proud to recognize his contributions.”
Furman and his wife Marilyn bring passion and innovation into a commitment to social justice by developing projects to house the homeless and less fortunate.
During the 2015 Vision Awards, we will celebrate and explore what is next for Charlotte’s Center City through the theme, “Inspiring Tomorrow’s Canvas.” It is our honor to celebrate the vision of David Furman and how that vision is helping to successfully build our city.
The Vision Awards also recognize and celebrate the contributions of individuals, businesses and organizations that have made the Center City a more vibrant urban core. The Special Achievement Award winners have had a major impact on Center City’s ongoing transformation, and Settlers Awards honor the pioneering and entrepreneurial spirit of Center City businesses, institutions or retailers who have been key contributors to Center City’s quality of life.
