Finding Gold in Green:  Incentives for Architects, Engineers, and Designers for their Energy Efficient Buildings and Designs

Presented by Randy M. Lucas, CPA

Mr. Lucas will present and review of some of the available tax credits and deductions that Architects can utilize in designing energy efficient (green) buildings as a result of recent energy tax legislation.  Included in these tax credits and deductions is an incentive that can potentially provide a direct reward to the Architect and/or Design Team for of an energy efficient commercial buildings for their public sector clients under Internal Revenue Code §179D.  Mr Lucas will lead a discussion of best practices to incorporate green-tax incentives for completed projects, projects currently under construction, and future design.  In addition, a review of comparisons and contrasts in the objectives in designing buildings for LEED registration and certification and design requirements for tax incentives such as the energy efficient commercial building deduction (Section 179D) and the homebuilder credit (Section 45L).

Presenter  Biography: Randy Lucas is the Founder and Principal Consultant for Lucas Tax + Energy Consulting headquartered in Charlotte.  Lucas Tax + Energy (LT+E) is a full-service tax consulting firm specializing in tax incentives for energy efficiency construction and for renewable and/or alternative energy technologies.  A native of Richmond, VA, Randy holds a Bachelors and Masters in Accounting from Virginia Tech.  He has over 17 years of experience in tax consulting representing clients in a diverse range of industries and is a licensed CPA in NC and PA.  Randy is an active member of the Charlotte Regional Chapter of the USGBC and serves on the Advocacy Committee.  Randy has presented technical trainings and co-authored a variety of technical articles on tax incentives at various national and local continuing education trainings throughout his career.  BEC Charlotte is an interdisciplinary forum where architects, engineers, consultants, manufacturers, contractors, developers, owners, educators, facility managers, and other interested individuals can meet.  The intent is to provide a means by which those with an interest in the enclosure (envelope) of commercial, institutional, and residential structures and the related building science can discuss common issues, obtain information, discuss local issues, and otherwise address subjects relating to the building enclosure.
