This course is an introduction and a tutorial for all architects and specifiers on the use of The Architectural Woodwork Standards (AWS), Second Edition to specify architectural cabinetry.


• Review the use of Section 10 for specifying wood veneer and plastic laminate casework.
• Participants are exposed to the full scope of architectural casework design, selection, and fabrication.
Topics include selecting the style of cabinet, shelf loading, finish materials, and drawer construction.
Edge treatments, case joints, and countertops are also explored.
• Participants learn to take control of woodwork quality; understand the cost effectiveness of the Quality Certification Program and the transfer of liability from the Designer to the Woodworker.
• Learn how to utilize the AWS to ensure quality architectural woodwork projects.
• Explore the differences between the AWS and its predecessor, the AWI Quality Standards Illustrated.
• Learn how to visually identify compliant Vs. noncompliant architectural woodwork products.
• Identify differences among premium, custom and economy grade woodwork.
• Acquire knowledge on the proper construction of some architectural woodwork products, including
drawers, countertops, cabinets, veneer, and wall panels.
• Learn how to find an accredited woodworker who knows how to fabricate, finish and install according
to the AWS.
